Course guides › Grade 6 › Afrikaans First Additional Language

Grade 6 Afrikaans First Additional Language (Eerste Addisionele Taal) builds on Grade 5. Learners read longer stories, poems, dialogues and information texts, write paragraphs, letters and short essays, talk about texts, and use more grammar, such as the passive voice, indirect speech and the tenses.

This guide is in English so every parent can follow it; the course itself will be in Afrikaans.

Course status: coming soon. We are still building the Grade 6 Afrikaans First Additional Language (CAPS) course, so it can’t be bought yet. This guide explains what the CAPS curriculum covers this year, so you can use it now. The planned price is R100 per subject per year.

Key ideas, with worked examples

The past tense (verlede tyd)

Afrikaans forms the past tense with het plus ge- on the verb.

Worked example. Ek speel. becomes Ek het gespeel.

Indirect speech (indirekte rede)

Use dat, and the verb moves to the end.

Worked example. Sipho sê: “Ek is moeg.” becomes Sipho sê dat hy moeg is.

The passive (lydende vorm)

Use word (present) or is ge- (past).

Worked example. Die hond byt die man. → Die man word deur die hond gebyt.

Common mistakes (and how to fix them)

  • Verb in the wrong place after dat (it goes to the end).
  • Forgetting ge- in the past tense.
  • Translating idioms directly from English.
  • Leaving out the second nie.

Tips for parents

  • Little and often. Fifteen minutes on most school days works better than a long session once a week.
  • Daily Afrikaans: a short radio slot, song or TV programme.
  • Read aloud, even if slowly; Listen mode will help with pronunciation.
  • Learn ten words a week and use them in sentences at supper.
