In Grade 7 Afrikaans First Additional Language (Eerste Addisionele Taal), learners read short stories, poems, novel extracts and youth drama, write essays, letters, summaries and emails, and deepen their grammar.

Key ideas, with worked examples
Relative pronouns (betreklike voornaamwoorde)
wat and wie join two sentences about the same person or thing.
Worked example. Dit is die seun. Hy wen die wedloop. → Dit is die seun wat die wedloop wen.
Intensive forms (intensiewe vorme)
Afrikaans adds fixed words to strengthen adjectives.
Worked example. yskoud (ice-cold), pikswart (pitch-black), doodmoeg (dead tired).
Writing a summary (opsomming)
Choose the main points, write them in full sentences in your own words, and keep to the word limit.
Worked example. Seven facts from a passage become seven short sentences, about 70 words, in a paragraph.
Common mistakes (and how to fix them)
- English word order in subordinate clauses (the verb goes to the end after wat, dat, omdat).
- Going over the word limit in summaries.
- Wrong register in formal letters.
- Leaving out the second nie.
Tips for parents
- Agree a routine, then step back. Senior Phase learners like to work on their own; check in on the week’s work rather than every page.
- Afrikaans media: a radio station, series or news site in Afrikaans for ten minutes a day.
- Make vocabulary cards for each text type.
- Use the parent memo to check work if you don’t speak Afrikaans.
